With the boom of poker, the game of Texas Hold’em established itself as the most popular form of poker across the globe. Played around the world, both online and in casinos, Texas Hold’em Poker, and in particular Texas Hold’em tournaments can be found anywhere and everywhere.

Hold’em poker can be played at tables with ten players all the way down to two players, or more commonly known as heads up. The game’s popularity is due to many factors but it success is mainly due to the games fast paced action and simple rules. The game of Texas Hold’em can be learnt in a matter of minutes, but this does not mean it can be mastered in minutes. The simple structure actually makes for a game with the need for in-depth strategy and calculations, because in Hold’em, the best hand can become worthless with the turn of a card.

Omaha Poker

The game of Omaha poker is a variation of Hold’em and may have taken a little longer to attract popularity but it is a game that is enjoyed by all true poker enthusiasts.  Growing quickly in popularity, Omaha Poker is played in a similar fashion to Hold’em with ten to two people playing at a table. 

Omaha attracts many poker players because its game structure gives for more bets, more calls and inheritably more action. Most commonly played in Europe, Omaha has more than one version. There is Omaha High and Omaha High Low, also known as Omaha 8. The game is mostly played as limit or pot limit games because the action generally leads to large pots anyway.

Seven card stud

Seven Card Stud Poker, was for a long time the most commonly played poker game and is considered by many to still be the most “pure” version of poker. Enjoyed by the Professionals because of its historical past as well as its complex play and difficulty to master, Seven Card Stud Poker is the true Poker Players’ game.  
Seven Card Stud requires more attention and expertise, like Bridge or Gin, than a community card game such as Hold’em or Omaha. 
This is not to say that Stud is any better than any other variation, but it is a game worth knowing how to play. Every poker player should have the ability to play multiple variations of the game, and Seven-Card is one of the most popular and important.

Five Card Draw

The game of Five Card Draw is one of the oldest variations of poker. The game is generally played with a maximum of five players. In Five Card Draw there is an initial Ante, meaning there is always money in the pot and that results in aggressive action.

Caribbean Stud Poker

All of the poker variations we have discussed until now are played between the players at the table and they bet against each other. Caribbean Stud is the exception to the rule. In Caribbean Stud everyone plays against the casino or house, which is always the dealer/banker.  The house pays out all winning bets and takes all loosing bets. To win a round of Caribbean Stud, a player must beat only the dealer’s hand and players in the game do not compete between each other.

Depending on what casino you are playing at some will even allow the players to show each other their cards to better judge the odds against the dealer. This is more of a casino game and the odds are in the house favour.
